The catalysing idea for this project is the concept of “multiplicity” found convergently and developed within the context of a city, Istanbul, and within the understanding of art as an arrangement that exists in connection with other arrangements. Considering the ever-increasing necessity of inter-personal connection, this project privileges this latter as well as production of contentful artwork that speaks to specific situations and individuals at a level of contingent intimacy.
Multiple Intimacy has been conceived as a work in progress for seven months and will be materialised in the form of an exhibition in Istanbul. Most of the artists involved have never been to Turkey before and this constitutes one crucial point of the project. During the process, several meetings and spontaneous discussions have been taking place between the participants, while various clues about the city have been provided. The artists were free in their decision wheter to follow, refer to or use these inputs. This work in progress had the aim of establishing a mutual dialogue and development of friendship within the group which certainly fed back the artistic production. Although the target – a show in a determinate city in a determinate time - was there since the beginning, development and the modality of process were not predicted. Room for change has been largely allowed. The project has been, still is and will continue until the opening of the show evolving like a puzzle, piece by piece, organically; like a rhizome.
The artists have been chosen because in their practice they do not hesitate to examine particular histories, stories, sites and concepts, and to speak to the viewer in a personal manner. They collect, share and then release. What they imagine or suppose in London, what they will think on the way from London to Istanbul, will evolve or change- exceeding different geographies and non-geographies. Over time and once in Istanbul, existing certainties will be smoothed and new ones may come along.
Multiple Intimacy will be hosted by Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Findikli district, in September 2007 and will open at the same time as the 10th International Istanbul Biennial.
